Five of the seven POS systems we cover work with Windcave terminals in New Zealand: Lightspeed, Hike, Lazygrid, Bustle and Tabin. Shopify POS needs a paid add-on app, and Loyverse doesn't do Windcave in NZ at all.
Don't rely on Windcave's own partner list to check. It misses several POS systems that say they support Windcave, and it still uses old product names. Check the POS company's help page too, or use our EFTPOS checker.
What a Windcave integration does
Windcave supplies EFTPOS terminals and payment processing to NZ businesses.
A terminal can work two ways:
- Standalone. Staff read the total off the POS and type it into the terminal. Quick to set up, easy to get wrong when it's busy.
- Integrated. The POS sends the amount to the terminal, the customer pays, and the result comes back to the POS. No re-keying, no "did that go through?" moments, and end-of-day totals that match.
Windcave says its terminals "integrate conveniently with a wide range of Point-of-Sale software and are flexible enough to be used independently too", and arrive pre-configured.
POS systems that work with Windcave
| POS | NZ EFTPOS integrations | On Windcave's list? |
|---|---|---|
| Lightspeed | Windcave, Shift4 (formerly Smartpay), Eftpos NZ (Verifone) | Yes, as "Kounta" (in-store) and "Vend" (online only) |
| Hike | HikePay, Eftpos NZ (Verifone), Windcave | No, but Hike's help covers Windcave in NZ |
| Lazygrid | Windcave, Eftpos NZ (Verifone), Shift4 (formerly Smartpay) | No, but Lazygrid's pricing page lists Windcave |
| Bustle | Eftpos NZ (Verifone), Windcave, Shift4 (formerly Smartpay) | Yes, under its old name "POSBoss" |
| Tabin | Eftpos NZ (Verifone), Windcave, Shift4 (formerly Smartpay) | No, but Tabin says it integrates with Windcave |
| Shopify POS | No built-in NZ EFTPOS integration (available via the paid OrderMate app) | Online only (website checkout) |
| Loyverse | Shift4 (formerly Smartpay), iOS only | No |
A few notes from the vendors' own pages:
- Hike. Hike's help says its Windcave integration is available in New Zealand and sends the amount to the terminal. It names the iPP350 and Move/5000 terminals, and needs an internet connection. Read our Hike review.
- Lazygrid. Its pricing page says integrated EFTPOS is on every plan: "The sale amount is sent to a supported terminal so staff do not re-key it." Read our Lazygrid review.
- Bustle. Bustle's NZ help lists Windcave among its integrated options, included in its base plans. Read our Bustle review.
- Tabin. Tabin's FAQ says it "integrates with Verifone, Windcave and Smartpay", and its starter pack bundles a Windcave terminal. Read our Tabin review.
- Shopify POS. For the shop counter, OrderMate by Made Simple Apps "supports Shopify POS with Windcave, Verifone and Smartpay / Shift4". See our Shopify POS and EFTPOS guide.
- Loyverse. In NZ, Loyverse integrates with Shift4 (formerly Smartpay) on iOS only. See our Shift4 integration guide.
How to read Windcave's integrations list
Windcave's integrations page is a filterable wall of partner names. We counted 197 entries on it, each tagged by solution (in-store, online and so on), business type and region. Windcave's marketing copy talks about "over 300+ integrations"; the list itself is shorter.
The regions are Asia Pacific, EMEA and North America. There's no New Zealand filter, so an Asia Pacific entry doesn't tell you it works here.
Old names you'll see
- Vend is now Lightspeed Retail (X-Series).
- Kounta is Lightspeed's hospitality product (O-Series). Its entry on Windcave's list even uses a Lightspeed logo.
- POSBoss is Bustle. Shift4's own page calls it "Bustle (previously posBoss)".
"Online" vs "Instore"
Each entry is tagged by where the integration works. Shopify and Vend are tagged Online only, so those are website-checkout links, not shop-counter ones. Kounta and POSBoss are tagged Instore. If you're choosing a POS for a counter, it's the in-store tag that matters.
What Windcave costs
Windcave doesn't publish NZ terminal prices: we couldn't find a pricing page on its site. Eftpos NZ's comparison table, a competitor's page, lists Windcave pricing as "Price on application".
What Windcave does explain, in a 2021 guide to card payments in NZ, is its model: one point of contact and one monthly invoice covering terminal rental, the payment network and merchant services. The same guide says EFTPOS leases run "usually for 36 months". Its fee examples date from before the interchange caps the Commerce Commission cut from 1 December 2025, so don't use them as today's rates.
When you ask for a quote, get these in writing:
- Monthly terminal rental, and the contract length
- Any network or SIM fee
- Merchant service fees for contactless, credit and online payments
- What happens if you leave early
Our EFTPOS fees guide explains each line, and the true cost calculator adds them up over a year.
Windcave vs the other NZ terminal providers
New Zealand has three main EFTPOS terminal providers that POS systems integrate with:
- Windcave, covered here.
- Shift4 (formerly Smartpay), which offers free terminal rental above a minimum monthly turnover. See our Shift4 guide.
- Eftpos NZ, which supplies Verifone terminals.
The best provider is usually the one your POS integrates with best, at a price you can see in writing. Our EFTPOS terminals guide covers the hardware, and EFTPOS rental in NZ covers hire and lease prices.
