Smartpay became Shift4 in January 2026. If you're searching for a "Smartpay POS integration", you're now looking for Shift4 (formerly Smartpay), and Shift4 says it's the same local team behind it.
Of the seven POS systems we cover, five work with Shift4 terminals: Lightspeed, Loyverse, Bustle, Lazygrid and Tabin. Shopify POS can connect through a paid add-on app. Hike doesn't list Shift4.
Smartpay is now Shift4: what changed
On 23 January 2026 Shift4's NZ blog announced: "We are excited to officially announce that Smartpay is now Shift4." Old smartpay.co.nz links now forward to shift4.co.nz, and the site footer reads "Smartpay Limited (NZBN 9429032012644), trading as Shift4".
Shift4's announcement says "We're still the same local team you trust" and talks about bringing "SkyTab POS", its own POS system, "to New Zealand shores". We couldn't confirm that SkyTab is on sale in NZ yet.
If you're an existing Smartpay customer, Shift4 hasn't published a list of changes you need to make. If anything about your terminal or bill looks different, ask Shift4 directly.
Shift4's terminals connect to Paymark, which Shift4 describes as New Zealand's largest payment network. Its pages still use Paymark's previous name, so don't let that throw you.
POS systems that integrate with Shift4
"Integrated" means, in Shift4's words, "the purchase amount is sent directly from your POS to your terminal. Meaning no manual entry". Shift4 says it builds its integrations in-house.
| POS | NZ EFTPOS integrations | On Shift4's partner page? |
|---|---|---|
| Lightspeed | Windcave, Shift4 (formerly Smartpay), Eftpos NZ (Verifone) | Yes |
| Loyverse | Shift4 (formerly Smartpay), iOS only | Yes |
| Bustle | Eftpos NZ (Verifone), Windcave, Shift4 (formerly Smartpay) | Yes, as "Bustle (previously posBoss)" |
| Lazygrid | Windcave, Eftpos NZ (Verifone), Shift4 (formerly Smartpay) | No, but Lazygrid's pricing page lists Shift4 |
| Tabin | Eftpos NZ (Verifone), Windcave, Shift4 (formerly Smartpay) | Not that we could find; Tabin says it integrates |
| Shopify POS | No built-in NZ EFTPOS integration (available via the paid OrderMate app) | No (via the OrderMate app) |
| Hike | HikePay, Eftpos NZ (Verifone), Windcave | No |
Shift4's partner page shows dozens of other names too, from Idealpos and MYOB to ROLLER and Micros, mostly as logos. A few of the logos didn't load when we looked, so if your POS isn't obvious on the page, ask the POS company.
Loyverse + Shift4 (iOS only)
This is the big one for small businesses, because Loyverse is Free. Loyverse says its integration works by "automatically transferring purchase amounts from Loyverse POS to Shift4 EFTPOS", and its hardware page lists the Shift4 S800 and S920 for New Zealand.
Two catches. It's "currently available only on iOS devices", so Android users key amounts in by hand. And Loyverse's offline mode (Partial in our comparison) doesn't cover integrated terminals: Loyverse says "integrated card processing terminals do not work offline". Read our Loyverse review.
Lightspeed + Shift4
Shift4 lists Lightspeed and has its own Lightspeed integration page. Lightspeed also integrates with Windcave, Shift4 (formerly Smartpay), Eftpos NZ (Verifone), so you can compare providers before you sign. Read our Lightspeed review.
Bustle + Shift4
Shift4's page says: "Work hand in hand with Bustle (previously posBoss)… native Shift4 (previously Smartpay) integration". Bustle's own help lists Shift4 alongside Windcave and Eftpos NZ, with payment integration included in its base plans. Read our Bustle review.
Lazygrid, Tabin, Shopify POS and Hike
- Lazygrid isn't on Shift4's page, but its pricing page lists Shift4 among the terminals it integrates with on every plan. Read our Lazygrid review.
- Tabin says it "integrates with Verifone, Windcave and Smartpay". We couldn't find it on Shift4's current page. Read our Tabin review.
- Shopify POS connects through OrderMate by Made Simple Apps, which "supports Shopify POS with Windcave, Verifone and Smartpay / Shift4". See our Shopify POS and EFTPOS guide.
- Hike's NZ payments page lists HikePay, Verifone and Windcave, not Shift4. Read our Hike review.
How Shift4 pricing works
Shift4 doesn't publish a rate card, but its blog on EFTPOS costs shows its main small-business plan, Low Cost Tap & Pay, at a merchant fee of "~ 1%" per transaction, and says it sets a rate for your business based on the cards you accept. The plan promises:
- "FREE Android terminal rental", subject to "a minimum monthly turnover threshold". Shift4 doesn't publish the threshold.
- "Pay one flat, low rate to accept all Visa and Mastercard payments". The plan page itself doesn't give the rate.
- A footnote: "Additional 3rd party fees apply."
Its EFTPOS machines page words the condition differently: "Free terminal rental with no network fee", with "Minimum Monthly Fee (MMF) and T&Cs apply". Ask which applies to you, and get the threshold and rate in writing.
"Low Fees" vs "No Fees"
Low Cost Tap & Pay comes in two flavours:
- Low Fees. You pay the flat rate and your customers pay nothing extra.
- No Fees. The terminal adds a surcharge to credit and contactless payments. Shift4's example: "The customer pays $101 (with a $1 surcharge applied automatically). Shift4 retains the $1 and deposits exactly $100 into your bank account. Your monthly transaction bill is $0." Customers who insert or swipe a card pay no surcharge.
Surcharging is allowed in NZ today. Commerce Commission guidance says to tell customers about it before they pay, offer at least one payment method without a surcharge, and not charge more than it costs you. A bill to ban in-store surcharges was reported back from select committee in November 2025 but, as at 5 October 2026, hadn't become law. On 1 October 2026 1News reported Commerce Minister Cameron Brewer saying National's intention to ban surcharging was unchanged. If you pick No Fees, be ready to switch. Our EFTPOS fees guide covers the details.
Short-term hire
Shift4 hires terminals for events and markets:
| Hire period | Price |
|---|---|
| 2 days | $140 |
| 7 days | $150 |
| 30 days | $180 |
| Longer | Seasonal or long-term plans |
Shift4 says "GST applies to all Short Term rental plans" and "a courier fee of $30 + GST covers delivery & returns". The hire terminals come with a prepaid SIM with unlimited data. Shift4 also says it has "56,000+ EFTPOS terminals in-market". For other providers' hire prices, see EFTPOS rental in NZ.
Shift4 vs Windcave vs Eftpos NZ
- Shift4 stands out for free rental if your turnover is high enough, and for Loyverse support.
- Windcave shows 197 integrations on its partner list, but publishes no prices. See our Windcave guide.
- Eftpos NZ supplies Verifone terminals and runs its own Verifone network.
The provider your POS integrates with best usually wins. Check your combination with the EFTPOS checker, compare the terminals in our EFTPOS terminals guide, or compare all seven POS systems. For hospitality, start with our best POS for cafés.
